Carved Marble Holy Ark (Aron Kodesh) from Italy

In some prosperous Italian synagogues, the holy ark was not wooden but carved from marble, in the manner of Renaissance and baroque portals and altars. Framed by polychrome marble columns and a sculpted pediment, sometimes crowned with the Tablets of the Law, it houses the scrolls behind ornate doors and bears a dedicatory inscription.
