Description
This basket, woven from palm leaves, was used to transport and preserve the lulav, a palm branch bound with myrtle and willow, one of the four plant species (arba minim) waved ritually during the festival of Sukkot. Throughout the seven days of the festival, worshippers hold the lulav and the citron (etrog) during blessings and processions at the synagogue. In North Africa, this type of holder was fashioned from woven plant fibers and accompanied the four species from home to the service. A utilitarian and seasonal object, it belongs to the material culture of Sukkot and the use of local materials in Maghrebi Judaism.
