Description
Curtain of the Jewish synagogues of Egypt, made of velvet embroidered in couched gold thread, sometimes re-embroidered with pearls. The oriental decoration marries arches, vases and stars to a Hebrew dedicatory inscription and date. Cairo workshops produced sumptuous pieces for the large congregations, in late Ottoman then Levantine taste.
