Embroidered Torah Binder (Mappah) from Italy
Enrich the Great Bookמפה לתורה רקומה מאיטליה
Description
Narrow band used to gird the closed Torah scroll before placing the mantle over it. Italian communities, which did not use the Rhenish wimpel, embroidered these mappot with flowers, birds and crowns in colored silks, often accompanied by the donor's dedication and a date. The careful work makes them small textile artworks.
