Calligraphed Torah elevation certificate (Mi Sheberach)
Enrich the Great Bookתעודת עלייה לתורה
Description
This document honored a worshipper called to the reading of the Torah (aliya) on a significant occasion, in connection with the blessing formula Mi Sheberach pronounced in favor of one who ascends to the Torah. Being called to the reading is an honor (kavod) conferred in the synagogue at the major moments of life, and the accompanying blessing invokes divine protection upon the recipient and those dear to them. In Eastern Europe, this type of certificate was printed with a decorative border and completed by hand with the honoree's name and the date. A commemorative object, it gives material form to the honorific dimension of participation in the synagogue service.
