Judeo-Persian Torah mantle in repousse leather
Enrich the Great Bookמעיל ספר תורה
Description
This covering wrapped the Torah scroll in the Jewish tradition of Persia, and could be associated with a rigid case depending on the regional customs of the Oriental rite. The Judeo-Persian communities, among the oldest in the diaspora, developed their own material culture, incorporating local textile techniques and leatherwork. These pieces feature floral-patterned textiles and embossed or repousse leatherwork characteristic of Persian craftsmanship. As a synagogal liturgical object, it testifies to the adaptation of Torah ornaments to the artistic traditions of Iran and to the richness of Persian Judaism.
