Description
This calligraphed certificate marked a boy's entry into religious majority at the age of thirteen, at his bar mitzvah, the moment when he becomes responsible for fulfilling the commandments. The bar mitzvah, which is traditionally accompanied by the young man's first ascent to the Torah, is a major rite of passage in Jewish life, celebrated with family and at the synagogue. In Central Europe, this type of commemorative plaque combined a decorative printed frame with the child's name and date inscribed by hand. As a commemorative object, it bears witness to the solemnity accorded to this threshold of religious life in the Ashkenazi world.
