Embroidered circumcision binder (mappa), Italian rite
Enrich the Great Bookמטפחת מילה רקומה, מנהג איטליה
Description
Strip of embroidered linen or silk wrapping the child at the brit milah, then donated to the synagogue. Unlike the Rhenish Wimpel cut from the swaddling cloth with continuous inscriptions, the Italian mappa favours a framed dedication, family arms and refined floral borders. It expresses the family's standing within the community.
