Description
This hanukkiah is carved from soft stone, with aligned hollowed cups intended to hold oil and wicks lit during the eight evenings of Hanukkah. More modest than metal lamps, it belongs to domestic use and local craftsmanship within the Jewish communities of North Africa. The stonework, simple and functional, offered an economical alternative to brass or bronze while fulfilling the same ritual function. This type illustrates the diversity of materials mobilized for a single object according to the resources and social milieux of Maghrebi Judaism.
