Description
This Hanukkah lamp belongs to the molded back-panel type, where a backing plate carries the row of cups or spouts lit during the eight evenings of the festival. Its distinctive feature is that it is fashioned in glazed faience rather than metal, in the taste of the fine earthenware manufactories active in Lorraine, notably in the region of Lunéville. The decoration combines floral motifs painted on the glaze with Jewish symbols reserved or integrated into the mold. This object illustrates the encounter between a regional French ceramic production and the ritual needs of the Jewish communities of eastern France.
