Description
Double seat in which, by tradition, one place is reserved for the prophet Elijah, guardian of the covenant, the other for the sandak who holds the child. In the Ottoman Empire such chairs could be inlaid with mother-of-pearl and engraved with inscriptions. Set up in the synagogue or the home, the chair remained in place a few days after the circumcision.
