Description
The talit katan, literally "small shawl," is a rectangular undergarment with four corners fitted with ritual fringes (tzitzit), worn continuously by observant men beneath their clothing, in fulfillment of the biblical commandment of fringes. Pulled over the head, it has a central opening and hangs over the chest and back, its tzitzit dangling at the four corners. The Sephardic tradition observes its own rules regarding the number of knots and windings of the fringe threads, which differ slightly from Ashkenazic practice. Made of wool in accordance with the most stringent prescription, this everyday object gives material form to the constant presence of the Law upon the body of the faithful.
