Illuminated ketubah, Hamburg-Altona (Portuguese rite)
Enrich the Great Bookכתובה מעוטרת, המבורג-אלטונה (מנהג פורטוגל)
Description
Marriage contract of the Portuguese Sephardim settled in the Hanseatic cities, close in style to the Amsterdam ketubot. Engraved borders, sometimes reused from one union to the next, frame a careful Portuguese-rite text. These merchant families cultivated a sober Baroque taste, distinct from the neighbouring Ashkenazi models.
