Description
This box was used to carry food gifts to loved ones during the festival of Purim, in fulfillment of the mitsva of mishloah manot, the sending of food portions that strengthens bonds between the faithful. The exchange of sweets, fruits and prepared dishes is one of the central customs of Purim, alongside the reading of the book of Esther and gifts to the poor. In the Ottoman Empire, these containers were crafted by Jewish goldsmiths in repoussé or filigree silver, adorned with flowers and arabesques in the Oriental taste. The object illustrates the festive conviviality and the refinement of Oriental Sephardic material culture.
