Breaking glass (kos meshuber) and embroidered pouch, Ashkenazi

Enrich the Great Book

כוס לשבירה ונרתיק רקום, אשכנז

Description

Glass the groom crushes underfoot at the close of the ceremony, recalling the destruction of the Temple. Often wrapped in a cloth or embroidered pouch to contain the shards, it could be an ordinary glass or a light goblet. The fragments were sometimes kept in memory of the union; some families reused a handed-down pouch.
