Embroidered Torah Valance (Kapporet) from Southern Germany

Enrich the Great Book

כפורת רקומה מדרום גרמניה

Description

Short horizontal valance hung above the ark curtain, completing the ensemble. The kapporet, whose name evokes the Tabernacle's mercy seat, has scalloped fringed lappets often decorated with the Temple's cultic vessels (menorah, showbread table, altar) embroidered in gold thread. Donated as a companion to the parokhet by Rhineland and Bavarian communities.
