Souverain de Syrie de 141 à 138 av. J.-C., né à Kasiana près d'Apamée, Diodote, dit Tryphon, officier d'Alexandre Balas, s'oppose aux prétentions de Démétrius II en plaçant sur le trône le jeune Antiochos, fils mineur d'Alexandre, avant d'attirer par ruse Jonathan le Hasmonéen de Bethsan à Ptolémaïs pour le faire mettre à mort à Baskama, puis de marcher contre Simon Maccabée en Judée. Ayant fait tuer le jeune Antiochos et s'étant proclamé lui-même « roi d'Asie », il pousse Simon à obtenir l'indépendance juive auprès de Démétrius ; finalement assiégé dans Apamée par Antiochos VII Sidétès, allié de Simon, après avoir fui jusqu'à Orthosia, Diodote se donne la mort.
