Famille française d'origine juive, l'une des plus présentes dans la vie artistique et intellectuelle du XIXᵉ et du début du XXᵉ siècle. Issue d'Élie Halfon Halévy (1760-1826), poète de langue hébraïque et secrétaire de la communauté juive de Paris, elle donne le compositeur Fromental Halévy (1799-1862), auteur de l'opéra La Juive et professeur de Gounod, Bizet et Saint-Saëns ; l'écrivain saint-simonien Léon Halévy (1802-1883) ; le librettiste Ludovic Halévy (1834-1908), collaborateur d'Offenbach et coauteur du livret de Carmen, élu à l'Académie française ; le philosophe et historien Élie Halévy (1870-1937), auteur de l'Histoire du peuple anglais au XIXᵉ siècle et cofondateur de la Revue de métaphysique et de morale ; et l'historien Daniel Halévy (1872-1962), biographe de Nietzsche, de Péguy et de Proudhon, témoin lucide de l'affaire Dreyfus dans Apologie pour notre passé. Par Geneviève Halévy (1849-1926), fille de Fromental, épouse de Georges Bizet puis d'Émile Straus et inspiratrice de Proust, la lignée touche aussi les mondes de la musique et des lettres.
