Né à Paris, fils du hazan Élie Halfon Halévy, secrétaire de la communauté juive de Paris et écrivain hébraïsant. Le patronyme, à l'origine « Lévy », fut changé en « Halévy » à la suite du décret de 1808 sur les noms fixes. Il composa La Juive (1835), l'un des piliers du répertoire lyrique français pendant un siècle.
