Born in Paris, son of librettist Ludovic Halévy and grandson/descendant of the Halévy family (composer Fromental Halévy is a great-uncle). Schoolmate of Marcel Proust at the Lycée Condorcet. He collaborated on Charles Péguy's Cahiers de la Quinzaine (1898–1914) and directed the "Cahiers verts" at Grasset (1921–1937). Author of biographies and historical essays (Nietzsche, Péguy, Michelet, Proudhon, Vauban). Elected to the Academy of Moral and Political Sciences (1949).
