After the annexation of Austria, a camp is opened near Mauthausen, on the Danube, around a granite quarry whose staircase becomes an instrument of death.
Mauthausen集中营在奥地利兼并后数月于上奥地利开设，毗邻一处花岗岩采石场，该采石场的石阶此后成为此地永久的象征。该营地被列为所有集中营中管制最为严苛的级别，接收来自全欧洲的被拘押者。犹太人被分配从事采石场中最为致命的劳役；该营地此后在多瑙河谷扩展出众多附属分营。
