Né en 1836 dans le quartier juif de Prague (Bohême). Premier champion du monde d'échecs officiel (1886–1894) et fondateur de l'école « positionnelle » moderne. Il diffusa ses idées dans la presse spécialisée, notamment dans sa revue The International Chess Magazine et dans son traité The Modern Chess Instructor (1889). Naturalisé britannique puis américain.
