Né en 1903 à Francfort, fils d'Oscar Alexander Wiesengrund, marchand de vins juif, et d'une mère chanteuse d'origine corse/génoise ; il adopte à la fin des années 1930 le patronyme maternel Adorno. Figure centrale de l'École de Francfort (théorie critique). Contraint à l'exil par le nazisme (Oxford puis États-Unis), il collabore avec Max Horkheimer à l'Institut de recherche sociale.
