Né à Kolín en Bohême, il dirigea pendant près de soixante ans une yeshiva réputée à Boskovice (Moravie), où il mourut en 1806, sans jamais occuper de poste rabbinique officiel. Il est célèbre pour son commentaire Mahatsit ha-Shekel sur le Choulhan Aroukh (Orah Hayyim et Yoreh De'ah), commentaire de référence encore étudié.
