Astronome et astrologue juif de Bassora, l'un des fondateurs de l'astronomie arabe. Il participa au choix du site de Bagdad pour le calife al-Mansour (762). Ses traités astronomiques furent traduits en latin et influencèrent l'Europe médiévale.
