Peintre hongrois né en 1837 à Rozgony, près de Kaschau. Formé par Roth jusqu'en 1850, puis pendant sept ans à l'Académie de Vienne sous Geiger, Meyer et Wurzinger, il séjourne à partir de 1860 à Berlin, Dresde, Munich puis huit ans à Paris, où il se fait une réputation de portraitiste. En 1868, il se rend à Varsovie pour se familiariser avec la vie des juifs polonais, sujet de plusieurs de ses tableaux, et reçoit une médaille d'or à l'Exposition internationale de Berlin en 1891.
