Né Leyvik Halpern près d'Ihumen (Igumen), il adopte le nom de plume « Leivick » (tiré de son prénom Leyvi) pour ne pas être confondu avec le poète Moyshe-Leyb Halpern. Militant du Bund, condamné au bagne et à l'exil en Sibérie, il s'évade et émigre aux États-Unis en 1913. Il devient l'un des plus grands poètes yiddish, célèbre pour son poème dramatique Der Goylem (Le Golem, 1921).
