Née dans une famille juive bourgeoise de Königsberg ; en 1831 son père, le marchand David Markus, abandonne son patronyme juif pour le nom Lewald, et Fanny se convertit au protestantisme. Elle vécut de sa plume, autrice de romans à grand tirage et de plaidoyers pour l'émancipation des femmes.
