Né dans une famille juive d'Uzlian (Empire russe, actuelle Biélorussie), fils d'Abraham Sarnoff et Leah Privin ; enfance passée au heder à étudier la Torah avant l'émigration à New York en 1900. Figure majeure des télécommunications américaines, il dirigea la Radio Corporation of America (RCA) de 1919 à sa retraite en 1970. Ses écrits et discours ont été rassemblés en volume.
