Benjamin, Judah Philip

Judah Philip Benjamin est un homme d'État et avocat américain né à Saint-Croix, aux Antilles, en 1811, et mort à Paris le 6 mai 1884, fils de juifs anglais installés à Saint-Croix peu avant sa naissance puis à Wilmington, en Caroline du Nord. Après trois années à Yale et des études de droit à La Nouvelle-Orléans, il est admis au barreau de Louisiane le 16 décembre 1832, y publie en 1834 avec Thomas Slidell le premier répertoire de jurisprudence louisianaise, puis acquiert une plantation sucrière; engagé en politique, il siège aux conventions constitutionnelles de Louisiane de 1844-45 et de 1852, et devient en 1849 grand électeur présidentiel pour cet État.
