Né à Essaouira, formé à l'École normale israélite orientale sous la direction d'Emmanuel Levinas, il émigre en Israël en 1970 et y soutient la première thèse israélienne sur Levinas. Il écrit en hébreu comme en français, situant l'essentiel de son œuvre romanesque à Essaouira-Mogador dont il reconstitue l'histoire et la vie juive, et se consacre à la philosophie et aux théologies du judaïsme.
