Né à Amsterdam en 1892, ingénieur et écrivain juif néerlandais, il joua un rôle précoce dans l'Indische Sociaal-Democratische Vereeniging et la fondation du Parti communiste indonésien. De retour aux Pays-Bas, il publia à partir de 1928 des ouvrages d'économie, dont le retentissant Sowjet-Rusland in de practijk (1928). Déporté, il fut assassiné à Auschwitz le 6 mars 1944.
