Les Juifs de Vitebsk

Vitebsk, in Belarus, was a center of a rich Yiddish-speaking community where Jews constituted a significant part of the urban population. Merchants, artisans and workers, they animated synagogues, study halls and communal institutions, and the city became in the early 20th century a notable artistic center, birthplace of painter Marc Chagall and seat of an avant-garde art school. Under Soviet rule, religious life was repressed while a secularized Jewish culture persisted. During the German occupation, the community was confined to a ghetto and almost entirely exterminated in 1941.
