Stanisławów (today Ivano-Frankivsk), in Eastern Galicia, housed an important Jewish community integrated into the commercial and artisanal life of a city with mixed Polish, Ukrainian and Jewish populations. Jews there had synagogues, schools and institutions, and the community encompassed various currents of Ashkenazi Judaism, from Hasidism to Zionism. Under German occupation, from 1941 onward, it was struck by mass massacres, including a major killing at the cemetery, then confined in a ghetto. The ghetto was liquidated in 1943, and nearly the entire Jewish population was exterminated.
