Les Juifs de Patras

Patras, port of the Peloponnese, harbored an ancient Jewish presence, attested since Antiquity, which perpetuated itself through a small Romaniote community in the Middle Ages. Under Ottoman rule, Sephardim came to settle there, enriching the community's religious and commercial life. Active in commerce, it always remained modest in size. During the Second World War and the occupation of Greece, the Patras community suffered persecutions and deportations that decimated Greek Judaism; a few descendants remain in Greece.
