Ternopil (Tarnopol en polonais), ville importante de Galicie orientale, abritait une communauté juive depuis le XVIe siècle, qui atteignit au XIXe siècle plusieurs milliers de membres. Centre commercial et intellectuel, la ville comptait des écoles juives, des journaux et des organisations culturelles. Lors de la Shoah, la communauté fut presque entièrement anéantie entre 1941 et 1943.
