Abraham Joshua Heschel (1907-1972), descendant de dynasties hassidiques et professeur au Jewish Theological Seminary, développa une théologie de l'émerveillement (radical amazement) et du pathos divin. Dans The Prophets et God in Search of Man, il décrit un Dieu en quête de l'homme. Engagé pour les droits civiques, il marcha aux côtés de Martin Luther King à Selma.
