Volos, a port in Thessaly, was home to a Jewish community with an ancient Romaniot component as well as Sephardim, active in commerce, notably maritime. The community possessed synagogues and institutions and participated in the life of the city. During the occupation of Greece in the Second World War, some of the Jews of Volos escaped deportation thanks to warnings and aid from the Greek population and Resistance, as well as local and religious authorities, many managing to hide in surrounding villages. Despite losses, a notable part of the community survived, and a Jewish presence was maintained there after the war.
