Né en France de parents américains d'origine juive ukrainienne. Enfant prodige, il dirigea de grands orchestres (Cleveland, Orchestre National de France, Pittsburgh, Bavarian Radio, Munich, New York Philharmonic). En 1960, premier Américain à diriger au Festival de Bayreuth. Son grand-père Isaac Maazel (1873–1925), né à Poltava, était violoniste à l'orchestre du Metropolitan Opera.
