Industrial city in the Zagłębie whose ghetto, one of the last in the region, was emptied in summer toward Auschwitz.

Zawiercie, an industrial city in the Zagłębie region born of textile mills and glassworks, annexed to the Reich, was home to a Jewish community that had formed in the nineteenth century alongside the rise of its factories. The occupier established there a closed quarter and textile production workshops where the inhabitants were forced to labor, which delayed the liquidation by several months compared to neighboring towns. In the summer, this quarter was nonetheless emptied: its inhabitants were gathered, sorted, and transported by rail convoys to the camp at Auschwitz, barely fifty kilometers away.
