The two ghettos of Upper Silesia, gathered in the Środula suburb, are liquidated toward Auschwitz despite an attempt at resistance.

Sosnowiec and Będzin, in Upper Silesia, formed an urban agglomeration whose Jewish communities had been gathered in a single enclosed quarter, established in the suburb of Środula, between the two cities.

The liquidation took place at the end of summer, toward Auschwitz, which was only a few dozen kilometers away. An underground organization, in which young members of youth movements were active, attempted armed resistance from bunkers built beneath the houses; it was crushed within a few days.
