Principal city of the wooded Carpathians, Turka sees Jews from surrounding villages flock to a closed quarter, before the entire population is directed to the death camp.
Turka, the administrative center of the forested Carpathians along the mountain pass railway, was home to a large community whose livelihood depended on timber, transit trade, and mountain fairs. Under occupation, Jews from the surrounding villages poured into an overcrowded enclosed quarter where hunger and typhus took hold. Able-bodied men were sent to labor camps in the region; the rest of the population was taken away in several actions to the extermination camp, the last among them being shot in the vicinity of the town.
