Liquidation of the Sokółka ghetto

Sokółka, a town in Podlachia on the road to Grodno, was home to an ancient Jewish community that made up roughly half of its population. Following the arrival of German troops, the Jewish population was subjected to requisitions and forced labor, then confined to an enclosed quarter where overcrowding and hunger claimed lives every week. In the autumn, this quarter was liquidated: its inhabitants were led to a regional gathering point, then transported by rail convoys to the Treblinka death camp. A few men retained for labor were killed in the months that followed.
