Liquidation of the ghetto of Limanowa

Limanowa, a small town in the Beskids south of Cracow, had a modest community of merchants and craftsmen, settled around the market square and the house of prayer. The occupying forces gathered there the Jews of the town and the surrounding mountain villages. In the summer, the population was assembled and sorted: some were shot in the nearby forest, the rest were taken to the station at Nowy Sącz and then transported to Bełżec. Families took refuge in the farms and shepherds' huts of the mountains; a few survived there through the war, but most were denounced. The community of Limanowa was never reconstituted.
