Bratslav, a town in Podolia that Hasidic memory associates with the master whose name it bears, falls under Romanian administration after the invasion. A ghetto is opened there, where the local Jews and convoys arriving from Bessarabia and Bukovina are crowded together. Typhus, hunger, and forced labor carry off a portion of those confined throughout two winters; some of the town's inhabitants manage to pass food over the fences.
