First centre of Operation Reinhard, in service from March to December 1942; the camp was subsequently razed and planted with trees.
Bełżec, a small town in the district of Lublin served by the railway, receives the first of the three killing centers of Operation Reinhard. The camp, tiny in scale, has neither residential barracks nor arrival registers: convoys are processed there within a matter of hours.
It operates from March to December of that year, after which the installation is dismantled, the ground plowed and planted with trees to erase all traces; a commando of detainees assigned to this task is subsequently eliminated. Only two men, who escaped from a convoy, were able to testify after the war about what took place there.
