Chełmno — Kulmhof — fut le premier centre de mise à mort de la Shoah, et le seul qui n'ait employé que des camions à gaz. Il n'y avait ni sélection ni camp de travail : les convois venaient du Warthegau et surtout du ghetto de Łódź, les arrivants étaient reçus dans un manoir, invités à se déshabiller pour un bain, puis conduits par un couloir jusqu'à un camion dont le moteur tournait ; les corps étaient enfouis, puis brûlés, dans une clairière de la forêt de Rzuchów.

Chełmno tient une place singulière parce que quelques évadés en sortirent très tôt : Jakub Grojanowski gagna le ghetto de Varsovie où son récit fut consigné par l'équipe d'Emanuel Ringelblum, et transmis à Londres dès l'année suivante. C'est l'un des premiers documents par lesquels le monde a su. Il n'y eut, au total, qu'une poignée de survivants.
