the Jewish town plundered by bands of insurgents

Pykiv, a small town in northern Podolia, was one of those Jewish localities distinguished by nothing save their vulnerability. The bands of insurgents who controlled the countryside entered it and plundered the Jewish homes, carrying off provisions and clothing. The town had neither garrison nor authority to oppose them. The name of Pykiv appears among the hundreds of localities that post-war inquiries recorded as having suffered a pogrom.
