Pogrom of the first year bands

Hloukhiv, former capital of the Cossack hetmanate in northern Sivershchyna, was home to a Jewish community that had settled there since the left-bank cities had opened their gates to it. In the early part of the year, as power was being contested between the Kiev government, the Bolsheviks, and peasant detachments, the city fell into the hands of insurgent bands from the surrounding countryside. The Jews were hunted down in the streets and in their homes for several days. This was one of the first major pogroms of the civil war, preceding the wave of the following year, and it foreshadowed what the towns of Ukraine were about to endure: no longer the riot of a few hours, but methodical slaughter carried out by armed men.
