The Jewish quarter of Nikolaïev was ransacked for two days during an Easter pogrom.
The paschal periodicity of these pogroms stems from the conjunction of two calendars: Holy Week, when preaching recalled the Passion, and the Jewish festival of Pessah, which provided a pretext for the accusation of ritual murder. This coincidence of dates organized anti-Jewish violence in Eastern Europe for centuries, and continued to govern it on the eve of the twentieth century.
